Literature Headstart (7-11)
What if reading didn’t feel like homework—but like stepping into a storybook?
Literature Headstart is designed for curious (or even reluctant!) readers who need a creative, confidence-building introduction to the world of literature. This class transforms tricky text into something students can see, hear, and feel through the art of performance.
Together, we’ll explore famous scenes, poetic language, and storytelling techniques—especially those found in Shakespeare and other classic works—in a way that feels fun, accessible, and full of discovery. Through acting, creative writing, and group story analysis, students will learn how to break down complex sentences, find the emotion behind the words, and understand what authors are really saying between the lines.
By treating literature like a living, breathing art form, Literature Headstart turns confusion into curiosity and “this is boring” into “I get it now!” The session culminates in a short, lighthearted showcase where students perform a scene or passage that they’ve decoded, interpreted, and made entirely their own.
By the end of the course, students will gain:
A stronger grasp of story structure, theme, and character
Confidence reading aloud and interpreting text
Foundational tools for analyzing and understanding literature
A sense of ease with poetic and heightened language
Creative self-expression and performance skills that make reading come alive
If your child has ever said, “I just don’t get it,” this is the class that will help them finally do—and have a great time along the way.
