Literature Headstart (12-15)
If your teen thinks Shakespeare is “lame,” they haven’t met this class.
Literature Headstart transforms the way students experience reading—turning complex language and classic literature into something vibrant, performative, and completely engaging. This course is designed for students who need extra support or a creative reintroduction to literature, helping them build both confidence and curiosity through the art of theatre.
Students will explore scenes and texts from great writers—especially Shakespeare and his contemporaries—by acting them out, breaking them down, and discovering how rhythm, tone, and word choice reveal meaning. Through performance-based reading and guided discussion, they’ll learn how to decode heightened language, identify key literary devices, and connect timeless themes to the modern world.
Perfect for reluctant readers or students preparing for advanced English and drama coursework, this class uses movement, voice, and creativity to make literature feel alive again. The session concludes with a mini showcase, where students share excerpts and interpretations of their favorite pieces, demonstrating their newfound understanding and expressive skills.
By the end of the course, students will gain:
Confidence reading and interpreting complex literature (including Shakespeare)
Analytical skills to identify theme, tone, and figurative language
Tools to break down and understand heightened or poetic text
Experience expressing emotion and meaning through performance
Critical thinking and creative communication abilities that support academic success
Literature Headstart doesn’t just teach reading—it teaches students how to see, feel, and understand the art of language itself.
