Stage Makeup (12-15)
Step behind the curtain and into the makeup chair! In Stage Makeup, students will explore the transformative art of theatrical and film makeup—where imagination meets technique, and a single brushstroke can change a story.
Each week, young artists will design and apply makeup for a different character inspired by stage and screen. From classic heroes and villains to fantasy creatures and historical figures, students will learn how to bring characters to life on their own faces through color theory, contouring, texture, and expressive design. Along the way, they’ll discover the fundamentals of face painting, special effects, and standard stage/film makeup—learning how lighting, emotion, and storytelling all play a role in the final look.
Through hands-on practice and guided creative challenges, students will gain the confidence to both conceptualize and execute original makeup designs, building an essential foundation for anyone interested in theatre, cosplay, or visual effects artistry. The course culminates in a mini makeup showcase, where students present their favorite looks and discuss their artistic choices.
By the end of the course, students will gain:
Foundational knowledge of stage and film makeup techniques
Hands-on experience designing and applying character looks
An understanding of color theory, lighting, and facial structure
Special effects basics (aging, scars, fantasy textures, and more)
Creative problem-solving and design planning skills
Confidence in self-expression through visual storytelling
From subtle transformations to dramatic illusions, Stage Makeup empowers students to turn imagination into artistry—one face at a time.
Makeup will be provided by Stagecraft.
